MARIA CAETANO: PONTE DI CONGIUNZIONE IDEALE TRA DUE MONDI EQUESTRI. AL CENTRO IL CAVALLO LUSITANO, ORGOGLIO DI UN POPOLO.

di Giulia Iannone È un grande onore per me avere avuto la possibilità di intervistare Maria Caetano, dressagista portoghese legata alla tradizione classica del dressage ed al futuro del cavallo lusitano moderno. Io la vedo come una amazzone "ponte" tra due mondi, sentimenti e visioni che porta in campo con sé la sua storia, le sue radici, le sue origini, la sua famiglia, i suoi cavalli, uno stile speciale, elegante armonioso gentile pulito come i Lusitani.

Maria Caetano, figlia d'arte, classe 1986, ha all'attivo 3 Campionati del Mondo, 2014 Normandia e 2018 Tryon, 2022 Herning, 11 Campionati d'Europa dal 2009 al 2023. Ha rappresentato il Portogallo alle Olimpiadi nel 2020 a Tokyo e nel 2024 a Parigi. Sono ben 7 i titoli di Campione Nazionale di Portogallo vinto ancora quest'anno in sella a Fénis de Tineo. Facciamo un bilancio della tua stagione equestre del 2025. Di cosa sei più soddisfatta e quale è il ricordo più importante e bello della tua stagione di questo anno? "La stagione 2025 è stata super impegnativa e molto riuscita per me sotto molti aspetti. All'inizio della stagione, ho iniziato vincendo i CDI a Jerez de la Frontera con entrambi i miei cavalli da GP. Poi ho disputato un Tour in Francia molto soddisfacente con ottimi risultati nel CDI5* a Fontainebleau e nel CDIO5* a Compiègne, dove sono salito sul podio e abbiamo ottenuto il 2°posto per la squadra portoghese. Successivamente abbiamo avuto un'ottima prestazione al CHIO di Aquisgrana, dove siamo riusciti a raggiungere le finali con Hit Plus e la squadra portoghese si è classificata sesta nella gara a squadre. Poi sono arrivati ​​i Campionati Europei a Crozet, dove abbiamo raggiunto la semifinale con ottime prove con Hit Plus. Ultima ma non meno importante, la medaglia d'oro ai Campionati Nazionali Grand Prix con Fenix ​​de Tineo (il mio settimo titolo come Campione Nazionale GP) e la vittoria nei campionati nazionali dei 7 anni con Oscar das Figueiras"

Duemilaventisei, anno dei campionati del mondo. Programmi, obiettivi e progetti. Su quale cavallo punti per il Mondiale e perché? Come ti prepari per la stagione prossima: clinic ed allenamenti vari. " Questa stagione sarà super emozionante con il Campionato Mondiale di Aquisgrana. Entrambi i miei cavalli da GP – Fenix ​​de Tineo e Hit Plus – sono super pronti per questo. Li preparerò e gareggerò con entrambi per arrivare ad Aquisgrana con uno di loro nella migliore forma possibile. Preparerò anche il mio futuro stallone di 7 anni, Pendragon Tineo, per i Campionati del Mondo Giovani Cavalli e Oscar das Figueiras gareggerà a livello internazionale nello Small Tour durante questa stagione."

In Portogallo hai partecipato ad un meraviglioso clinic con Monica Theodorescu per celebrare il buon training. Tu hai partecipato con Horizonte. Cosa ti è piaciuto e quali spunti significativi hai riportato? come si è comportato Horizonte? "Sono una grande fan del modo in cui Monica vede il dressage e sono anche una sua cara amica, quindi non avevo dubbi sulla partecipazione a questo clinic. Mi è stata di grande aiuto, dandomi ottimi consigli sull'equitazione classica, in questo sport. Mi è piaciuto molto partecipare a questo training e Horizonte si è comportato molto bene."

Quale è il tuo cavallo preferito tra quelli che hai oggi a disposizione e perché? "È una domanda a cui è impossibile rispondere, perché adoro tutti i miei cavalli, compagni di gara. Quelli da GP sono sempre speciali per me, perché passiamo così tanto tempo insieme a gareggiare in giro per il mondo. Ma i più giovani mi danno speranza e aspettative per il futuro. Quindi, non riesco proprio a sceglierne uno come il mio preferito."

In ottobre abbiamo letto che il cavallo che montavi in Gp, Nobel das Figueras è stato ceduto all'America. Ormai tutti si sono accorti della grandezza dei Lusitani, cosa ne pensi? Hai dichiarato che questo cavallo ti mancherà molto: cosa in particolare e come è stato montarlo? "Nobel è un cavallo di grande talento. Abbiamo avuto un ottimo match fin dall'inizio, quindi siamo riusciti a salire rapidamente fino al GP. È molto intelligente e ha voglia di lavorare quindi ho sempre creduto che sarebbe diventato una star internazionale del GP. È stato un addio difficile per me, ma sono felice di vedere che sta andando molto bene ed è molto felice in Florida."

Tu sei una amazzone speciale per il dressage del tuo paese. Rappresenti il ponte di congiunzione tra la cultura classica del dressage ( tuo padre era un bull fighter) e la tecnica moderna del buon dressage agonistico, attraverso l'uso del Lusitano che si sta evolvendo come soggetto sempre più atletico e competitivo. Come vivi e senti questo ruolo tecnico ed espressivo come amazzone ogni volta che scendi in campo e rappresenti non solo il tuo paese, ma la tua famiglia, il tuo stile e le tue radici? "Quando entro nell'arena dressage, cerco di essere concentrato al 100% sul mio cavallo e di godermi il momento completamente libero da qualsiasi altro pensiero. Ma essere considerato un modello per il mio Paese e per il Lusitano è un grande onore che mi spinge a impegnarmi sempre di più ogni giorno per poter soddisfare tutte le aspettative e mostrare con orgoglio al mondo l'equitazione classica del nostro Paese e i nostri splendidi cavalli Lusitani."

Maria Caetano, amazzone prestigiosa internazionale e punta di diamante del Portogallo, hai ancora un sogno equestre nel cassetto da realizzare per te o per il dressage del tuo paese? "Dico sempre che mi piace il percorso e non gli obiettivi finali, ma ovviamente ogni atleta vuole continuare a crescere nel suo sport e migliorare sempre di più ogni stagione. Raggiungere la finale alle Olimpiadi è un sogno per cui combatto ogni giorno e, soprattutto, avere una carriera lunga, rispettata e di successo nello sport internazionale, conosciuta per la qualità dell'equitazione classica e il rispetto per i cavalli, è il mio obiettivo finale."

ENGLISH VERSION: Let's take stock of your 2025 equestrian season. What are you most satisfied with and what is your most important and fondest memory of your season this year? The 2025 season was super busy and very successful for me in many ways. In the beginning of the season, started winning CDIs in Jerez de la Frontera with my both GP horses. Then I had a very satisfying French Tour with great results in the CDI5* in Fontainebleau and in the CDIO5* in Compiegne, were I reached the podium and we got the 2nd place for the Team Portugal. After that we had a very nice performance at the CHIO Aachen where we could reached the Finals with Hit Plus and the Portuguese team got 6th in the Team competition. Then it came the European Championships in Crozet where we reached the semi- final with great tests with Hit Plus. Last but not least, was the Gold Medal at the Grand Prix National Championships with Fenix de Tineo(my 7th title as National GP Champion) and the win in the 7 years old class national championships with Oscar das Figueiras. 2026 year of the World Championships. Plans, goals, and projects. Which horse are you betting on for the World Championships and why? How are you preparing for next season: clinics and various training sessions. "This season will be super exciting with the WC in Aachen. My both GP Horses – Fenix de Tineo and Hit Plus – are super ready for it. I’ll prepare and compete both of the in order to get Aachen with one of them in the best shape as possible. I’ll also prepare my coming 7yo stallion Pendragon Tineo for the Young Horses World Championships and Oscar das Figueiras will be competing internationally in Small Tour during this season. In Portugal, you attended a wonderful clinic with Monica Theodorescu to celebrate the good and correct training. You participated with Horizonte. What did you like and what significant insights did you take away? How did Horizonte perform? "I’m a big fan of Monica’s view of dressage and also a good friend of her, so I had no doubt about the participation on this clinic. She helped me a lot, giving nice tips towards the classic equitation in the sport. I really enjoyed it and Horizonte performed very well." Which horse is your favorite among those you have available today and why? "It’s an impossible question to answer as I love all of my competition partners. The GP ones are always special for me, as we spend so much time together competing around the world. But the younger ones give me hope and expectations towards the future. So, I cannot really pick one of them as my favorite." In October, we read that the horse you rode in the Grand Prix, Nobel das Figueras, was sold to America. Everyone has noticed the greatness of the Lusitanos by now. What do you think? You said you'll miss this horse greatly: what was it like riding him in particular? Nobel is a super talented horse. We had a great match since the beginning, so we could rise until the GP very quick. He is super clever and willing to work so I always believed he would become an international GP star. It was a difficult farewell for me, but I’m happy to see that he is doing very well and he is very happy in Florida." You are a special rider for your country's dressage. You represent the bridge between classical dressage culture (your father was a bullfighter) and the modern technique of good competitive dressage, through the use of the Lusitano, which is evolving into an increasingly athletic and competitive horse. How do you experience and feel this technical and expressive role as a rider, every time you take to the dressage arena, and represent not only your country, but your family, your style, and your roots? "When I get into the arena, I try to be 100% focused in my horse and to enjoy the moment totally empty of any other thoughts.But to be seen as a role model for my country and for the Lusitano is a great honor, that makes me work more and more every day to be able to reach all the expectations and proudly show to the world our country classic equitation and our nice Lusitano horses." Maria Caetano, a prestigious international rider and Portugal's top rider, do you still have an equestrian dream you'd like to realize for yourself or for your country's dressage? "I use to say that I enjoy the path and not the final goals, but of course, every athlete wants to keep rising on his sport and to get better and better every season. To reach the Finals in the Olympics it’s a dream for which I fight every day and, most of all, to have a long, respected and successful career in the international sport, known by the quality of the classical equitation and the respect for the horses, is my ultimate goal."
