ANDREW NICHOLSON ALWAYS WINS, EVEN AS COACH

After the victory of the Swiss team, at the Pratoni del Vivaro, we contacted their coach, the great former rider of eventing, Mr. Andrew Nicholson, to carry out an interview. Despite his numerous commitments, and thanks to the intervention of his wife and his very kind staff, we were able to complete the meeting online. Here's what Andrew told us about the Switzerland he coached. By Giulia Iannone How did you come up with the idea and the proposal to have Andrew Nicholson follow the Swiss eventing team as a whole? “I was approached by Dominik Berger at the World Equestrian games in Tryon in 2018 where he asked if I would be interested in becoming the cross country trainer for the Swiss team to help them to qualify for the Olympics in Tokyo.” What situation did you find and what were the interventions, or the changes you made, on the work, on the programs, on the methods immediately? “When I started to work with the riders I found that they had not had much help in this area of training before but they were very eager and willing to learn, and did everything I asked of them in training.” How long have you been with the Swiss team now? “4 years” How many times do you follow the pairs , in what way and what kind of spirit, motivation and commitment did you notice on the part of the riders, in following your training? “I work 4 or 5 times with the riders from January to March in Switzerland before they start the competitions. We have normally a 2 day training session each time. When the competitions start I will then travel to the important events so I can walk the cross country course with the riders and advise them in their preparation.” What technical level did you find, and what kind of atmosphere did you manage to create in the team or was there already cohesion and team spirit? “In the beginning when I started to work with them, there weren’t very many rider and horse combinations competing at the top level. Over the last few years there are more riders who have progressed to ride at the top level which is credit to the overall training program for them. They work very well together as a team and there is a good positive atmosphere where they want each other to do well for the sake of their team.” Do you like being a coach, after competing so much around the world? “I enjoy working with this group of riders very much as they want to learn and improve.” What is or was the most obvious technical problem to work on? “The biggest technical problem was to communicate with them as I don’t speak Swiss German or French!” Do you take care of all three tests or just the cross country test ? “I work mainly on the cross country but I also work closely with Gilles Ngovan who is the dressage trainer and with Lesley McNaught, their showjumping trainer. This is overseen by Dominik Berger who is a fantastic chef d’equipe and organizes us all.” Did you expect this beautiful triumph in Italy, at the Pratoni del Vivaro? Can you comment on this triumph? “. I expected the team to do well as their results have been very impressive this year at International events, but to win and beat some of the best Eventing nations in the world, was a very proud moment for me.” Since you started today, what is the most important change you have noticed in the Swiss team that you wanted to bring to fruition? “Winning competitions !” How is your work as a technician going on now? “We are now preparing for our final competitions which are the build up for the World Games in Pratoni in September.” I ask you a question "of the devil"! but also a little bit interested. And if Italy asked you, would you come to coach our team as a whole? What would you start from? Un fortunately I am not enabled, but it would be a great dream!!!! “ I wouldn’t change my role at the moment. The Italian team are lucky to benefit from the advice and guidance of my great friend Stefano Brecciaroli whom I respect a lot!”

VERSIONE ITALIANA ANDREW NICHOLSON VINCE SEMPRE, ANCHE COME COACH Di Giulia Iannone Dopo la vittoria della squadra svizzera, ai Pratoni del Vivaro, abbiamo contattato il loro allenatore, il grande ex completista internazionale, mito del mondo del completo, Mr. Andrew Nicholson, per realizzare un'intervista. Nonostante i suoi numerosi impegni, e grazie all'intervento della moglie e del suo gentilissimo staff, abbiamo potuto portare a termine l'incontro online. Ecco cosa ci ha raccontato Andrew sulla Svizzera che ha allenato. Come nasce l'idea e la proposta di far seguire, proprio ad Andrew Nicholson, da poco ritirato dalla carriera agonistica, la squadra svizzera del completo? "Sono stato avvicinato da Dominik Berger ai giochi mondiali di equitazione a Tryon nel 2018, dove mi ha chiesto se fossi interessato a diventare l'allenatore di cross country della squadra svizzera per aiutarli a qualificarsi per le Olimpiadi di Tokyo". Che situazione hai trovato e quali sono stati gli interventi, o le modifiche che hai fatto, sul lavoro, sui programmi, sulle modalità nell'immediato? "Quando ho iniziato a lavorare con i cavalieri, ho scoperto che non avevano avuto molto aiuto in quest'area dell'allenamento prima, ma erano molto desiderosi e disposti ad imparare e hanno fatto tutto ciò che ho chiesto loro durante l'allenamento". Da quanto tempo sei coach della la squadra svizzera adesso? "4 anni" Quante volte segui i binomi, in che modo e che tipo di spirito, motivazione e impegno hai notato da parte dei cavalieri , nel seguire i tuoi allenamenti? “Lavoro 4 o 5 volte con i cavalieri, da gennaio a marzo, in Svizzera prima che inizino le gare. Normalmente abbiamo una sessione di allenamento di 2 giorni ogni volta. Con l’inizio della stagione agonistica, li ho seguiti agli eventi importanti per poter percorrere il percorso di cross country con gli atleti e dare indicazioni e consigli importanti per interpretare al meglio il percorso di campagna”. Che livello tecnico hai trovato, e che tipo di atmosfera sei riuscito a creare nella squadra o c'era già coesione e spirito di squadra? “All'inizio, quando ho cominciato a lavorare con loro, non c'erano molti cavalieri e cavalli che gareggiavano ai massimi livelli. Negli ultimi anni ci sono più cavalieri che sono progrediti raggiungendo i massimi livelli, il che è merito del programma di allenamento generale, ideato ed approntato per loro. Lavorano molto bene insieme come una squadra e c'è una buona atmosfera positiva, desiderano realmente che l'altro, il compagno di squadra faccia bene, per il bene della loro squadra". Ti piace fare l'allenatore, dopo aver gareggiato così tanto in giro per il mondo? “Mi piace molto lavorare con questo gruppo di cavalieri perché vogliono imparare e migliorare”. Qual è o era il problema tecnico più evidente su cui lavorare? "Il problema tecnico più grande è stato quello di comunicare con loro perché non parlo svizzero tedesco o francese!" Ti occupi di tutti e tre le prove o solo del test di cross country? “Lavoro principalmente sul cross country, ma lavoro anche a stretto contatto con Gilles Ngovan che è l'allenatore di dressage e con Lesley McNaught, il loro allenatore di salto ostacoli. Questo è supervisionato da Dominik Berger che è un fantastico chef d'equipe e ci organizza tutti". Vi aspettavate questo bel trionfo in Italia, ai Pratoni del Vivaro? Puoi commentare questo trionfo? “. Mi aspettavo che la squadra facesse bene dato che i loro risultati sono stati davvero impressionanti quest'anno agli eventi internazionali, ma vincere e battere alcune delle migliori nazioni di eventi al mondo, è stato un momento che mi ha riempito di grande orgoglio". Da quando hai iniziato oggi, qual è il cambiamento più importante che hai notato nella squadra svizzera che volevi portare a compimento? "Concorsi vincenti!" Come procede adesso il tuo lavoro di tecnico? "Ci stiamo ora preparando per le nostre gare finali che sono la preparazione per i Giochi Mondiali di Pratoni a settembre". Ti faccio una domanda "del diavolo"! ma anche un po' interessata. E se l'Italia te lo chiedesse, verresti ad allenare tutta la nostra squadra? Da cosa partiresti? Purtroppo non sono abilitata, ma sarebbe un grande sogno!!!! “Non cambierei il mio ruolo in questo momento.
